As Jesus and His disciples were on their way,
He came to a village where a woman named Martha
opened her home to Him.
She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what He said.
But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.
She came to Him and asked,
"Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!"
"Martha, Martha,"
the Lord answered,
"You are worried and upset about many things,
but few things are needed -or indeed only one.
Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."
-Luke 10:38-42
I have always thrived in busyness. I am definitely a Martha and I know that others are as well. We must not confuse doing things for God vs spending time with God. That are not the same thing. Spending time with God to be still is vital for us as believers.
Another part of Scripture that sticks out to me is how I can very easily slide into a goal oriented mind set. When I am serving the Lord I need to do it with the right HEART and MIND SET. Is my heart doing this as a service for the Lord or am I just trying to get things done. Am I serving to bless others or was this another item on my list of things to get done. Do not get me wrong, I love to serve others. Service is even one of my spiritual gifts, but it is very easy to get lost in service and forget about the why of service.
Being a Martha is okay, but let's not loose sight of our purpose here and the only way to get to Heaven. We should all use our gifts to serve the Lord, but what Martha lost sight of was our service to the Lord should revolve around our spending time with Him not the other way around. Jesus has done the work by coming and dying on a cross for us. He paid the price that we could never have paid. Spending time with the Lord has to be priority for our lives despite the busyness we all find ourselves in. It is so easy to allow our quiet time to be the first thing to go in busyness but that needs to be the place where we are unwilling to ever compromise with our time.
I challenge you to be Still with the Lord every day this week for a minimal of 10 minutes. Read your Bible, put worship music on, pray to Him, and/or just be completely silent. Refuse to compromise this time with Him. Set your Heart and Mind on things above and see what God reveals to you.
